Measles outbreak in Beja, Portugal with three cases and ~500 contacts

The Local Health Unit of Baixo Alentejo (ULSBA) confirmed three measles cases in the municipality of Beja. All patients are adults aged between 30 and 55 years; two were unvaccinated and the third had received the full national vaccination schedule. Epidemiological investigation linked the three cases to a common source, defining the situation as a localized outbreak.

ULSBA identified almost 500 people as at‑risk contacts. Vaccination status was checked for all, and more than 120 contacts received preventive measles vaccination in line with the Directorate‑General of Health (DGS) guidelines. The authorities emphasise that the outbreak is currently under control, with no indication of uncontrolled spread, and continue to monitor the situation and encourage up‑to‑date immunisation.

The measles virus is highly contagious, transmitted via airborne droplets. While usually benign, it can lead to serious complications. Vaccination remains free under Portugal’s National Vaccination Programme, with two doses recommended during childhood.
