Measles Outbreak in Pakistan's Sindh Province Kills 53 Children

An ongoing measles outbreak in Sindh, Pakistan, has resulted in the deaths of 53 children and infected more than 2,000 others in the province this year. Nationwide, the disease has caused 96 child deaths, with over 20,000 suspected cases and more than 7,000 laboratory‑confirmed infections across the country.

Health officials attribute the surge to low vaccination coverage; about 30% of parents in the region have not immunised their children. Pediatrician Dr. Khalid Shafi warned that many of the fatalities could have been prevented with routine measles vaccinations—first dose at nine months and a second dose at 15 months. Complications such as pneumonia and brain swelling are common in severe cases, especially among young children with weakened immune systems. Authorities continue to urge parents to complete the vaccination schedule and seek immediate medical care for symptomatic children.
