Measles outbreak linked to Urkult festival in Sweden
A measles outbreak linked to the Urkult festival in Sollefteå has resulted in dozens of reported cases. As of recent reports, at least 24 cases have been identified, with nine specifically confirmed in the Stockholm region. The majority of those infected are unvaccinated individuals under the age of 18.
Health authorities, including the Public Health Agency of Sweden, are using the outbreak as an opportunity to remind the public to verify their vaccination status. Stephan Stenmark, acting deputy state epidemiologist, advises adults who have only received one dose of the vaccine to plan for a second dose. While Sweden maintains a high measles vaccination coverage of approximately 95 percent, the outbreak has caused concern, leading to a significant increase in inquiries to healthcare services like 1177 in Västerbotten.
Medical professionals emphasize that while the disease is highly contagious and can be life-threatening, vaccinated individuals do not need to be concerned. Authorities are currently conducting contact tracing for all exposed individuals.
