Measles outbreak reaches Pittsburgh region amid rising Pennsylvania cases

Measles has reached the Pittsburgh region for the first time since 2019, prompting warnings from medical professionals about a potential surge in cases. A diagnosis at UPMC Children’s Hospital has highlighted the growing risk in Allegheny County, where health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination rates, data tracking, and rapid contact tracing to contain the highly contagious virus.

Pennsylvania has confirmed 379 measles cases so far this year, with 181 occurring in Lancaster County. Experts attribute the rising outbreak to declining vaccination rates; while herd immunity typically requires a 95% immunization rate, Pennsylvania’s rate was approximately 92% during the 2024-25 school year. The disease has been spreading westward through counties including Indiana, Somerset, and Clarion.
