United States reports surge in measles cases across multiple states

The United States is experiencing a significant rise in measles cases, with over 2,500 confirmed infections reported in 2026. Public health officials are responding to localized outbreaks across several states, including Georgia, California, Iowa, and New York.

In Georgia, the Department of Public Health confirmed a case in an unvaccinated resident in the Atlanta area. Similarly, in Orange County, California, an adult infected with measles visited multiple public locations, including restaurants and a cafeteria, prompting health officials to urge residents to check their immunity status.

In Iowa, the Department of Health and Human Services is managing an outbreak in Davis County with 12 confirmed cases showing person-to-person spread. Meanwhile, Western and Upstate New York have reported multiple cases across several counties, including Steuben, Seneca, Madison, and Allegany.

Health experts note that declining childhood vaccination rates are a contributing factor. While the MMR vaccine is highly effective, many regions are currently reporting vaccination rates below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity. Officials emphasize that the virus is highly contagious and can remain airborne for up to two hours.
