Measles outbreaks rise in Oregon and Kentucky

Measles cases are rising across several U.S. states, with Oregon and Kentucky reporting significant outbreaks in 2026.

In Oregon, the number of confirmed cases has reached 45, surpassing the previous peak recorded two years ago. Most cases have been concentrated in Multnomah County, though wastewater monitoring indicates the virus is present in Washington, Polk, Marion, and Klamath counties. Public health officials noted that local departments are facing resource strains due to the expiration of federal COVID-19 funding. Consequently, the Oregon Health Authority has adjusted investigation guidelines to reduce the administrative burden on local agencies.

Kentucky is also experiencing its largest outbreak in decades, with 19 confirmed cases in 2026—the highest number since 1991. Recent cases have been identified in Christian, Owen, Todd, Trigg, and Washington counties. Health officials reported that all 19 cases involved unvaccinated individuals, resulting in two hospitalizations. The Kentucky Department for Public Health is actively investigating the spread and expects the number of affected counties to increase.
