Meat consumption becomes a political issue in U.S. midterms

Meat consumption and dietary choices have emerged as central themes in various U.S. midterm election races. Candidates are facing scrutiny over their stances on meat production, beef prices, and animal welfare.

In Mississippi, Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom has targeted Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. Colom released a video responding to Hyde-Smith’s suggestion that consumers facing high beef prices should simply choose other proteins.

In Texas, Republican opponents have highlighted past comments from Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico regarding a previous vegan campaign initiative. Talarico has since attempted to counter these claims by publicly eating barbecue.

In Colorado, Republican Representative Gabe Evans is campaigning against Democratic congressional candidate Manny Rutinel. Republicans have pointed to Rutinel’s past activism against factory farming and his involvement with Climate Refarm, an organization advocating for reduced meat consumption and higher taxes on meat and dairy products.
