Meat prices climb sharply in Corrientes, Argentina

In Corrientes' Fresh Products Market, beef prices have continued to rise as weekly supply shortages push costs upward. Butcher Hugo Lucena reported that ground beef now ranges from 9,000 to 16,000 Argentine pesos per kilo, depending on the cut, with other cuts such as ribs and flank steak matching the lower end of that scale. He noted that winter typically exacerbates the price pressure and that consumers are shifting toward cheaper proteins, including pork and chicken.

Retail chicken sellers also faced a sudden 10‑peso per kilo increase imposed by suppliers, forcing them to raise retail prices. The combined price hikes in beef and chicken are straining household budgets and highlighting supply constraints tied to higher export profitability.

The market’s volatility reflects broader economic stress for local families, who must balance purchasing power against the rising cost of staple meats.
