Meat storage guidelines for freezer safety and quality

Freezing is an effective method for preserving meat, as maintaining temperatures of at least -18 degrees Celsius practically stops bacterial growth. However, freezing does not sterilize food; it merely renders existing bacteria inactive, meaning they can multiply again once the meat thaws.

While food remains safe to eat for extended periods if stored correctly, the quality regarding taste, texture, and juiciness declines over time. Recommended storage durations for optimal quality include:

• Chicken breast and thighs: 9–12 months • Ground meat: 3–4 months • Pork: 4–12 months • Beef: 8–12 months • Lamb: 6–9 months • Fatty fish: 2–3 months • Lean fish: 6–8 months

Factors such as fat content and packaging quality also influence exact shelf life.
