Mecca Agreement reshapes Middle East security architecture

A new defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, referred to as the "Mecca Agreement," is reshaping the security architecture of the Middle East. The pact includes a mutual defense clause, which some analysts compare to NATO's Article 5, stating that an attack on one member is an attack on all.

This shift has significant implications for Greece. The Greek government has transitioned from an annual to a monthly re-evaluation of the Greek Patriot missile batteries stationed in Saudi Arabia since 2021. This decision, initiated by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, aims to account for the increased volatility in the region and the evolving strategic alliances formed by the Saudi leadership.

The agreement also impacts broader geopolitical alignments, potentially strengthening ties between Israel, India, Cyprus, and Greece as a counterweight. While India has denied reports of an urgent attempt to sign a similar pact with Israel, New Delhi is closely monitoring the tripartite alliance, particularly regarding the involvement of Pakistan.
