Mecca Joint Defense Agreement faces scrutiny amid Yemen tensions

The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, signed between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, has returned to the forefront of regional security discussions due to escalating tensions in Yemen. The pact stipulates that an armed attack against one signatory constitutes an attack against all members.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed the potential military implications of the agreement, noting serious attacks against Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Fidan indicated that Turkey is prepared to fulfill its obligations under the alliance, potentially providing technical and military support. He also noted that the institutionalization of the alliance is nearing completion, with steps being taken toward establishing a military headquarters and personnel assignments.

In response to discussions regarding the activation of the pact, Houthi official Mohammed Al-Bukhaiti warned that direct involvement by Turkey or Pakistan in the Yemen conflict would result in military retaliation against those nations. Meanwhile, analysts suggest the agreement positions Pakistan as a geostrategic pivot, linking its security posture to Gulf dynamics while providing Saudi Arabia with a nuclear-armed defense partner.
