Mechanics of progressive jackpot gaming
Progressive jackpots function by pooling a small percentage of every bet—typically between 0.5% and 2%—into a communal prize that grows continuously. Unlike fixed jackpots, these amounts increase based on player activity across a network of connected machines or tables.
There are two primary types of progressive jackpots: local jackpots, which are specific to a single casino or platform, and networked jackpots, which are shared across hundreds of establishments globally. While networked jackpots offer much larger sums, the mathematical probability of winning remains extremely low, often ranging from 1 in 10 million to 1 in 50 million draws.
Because a portion of the wager is diverted to the jackpot pool, the Return to Player (RTP) for progressive games is generally lower than standard slots. While classic slots typically offer an RTP between 95% and 97%, progressive games usually range between 85% and 94%.
