Mechanization in Finland and its impact on gender roles
Research by Eva Forslund indicates that the mechanization of dairy farming in Finland significantly influenced social and political structures. Between 1942 and 1969, the number of milking machines in the country increased from 300 to 80,000.
This technological shift coincided with an increase in women's representation on municipal councils starting in the mid-1960s. By relieving women of the labor-intensive task of hand-milking, mechanization provided the opportunity for greater political participation. However, the transition also had drawbacks, as it diminished the perceived value of women's traditional expertise in manual milking.
