Mecklenburg-Vorpommern election campaign intensifies
Political activity is intensifying in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ahead of the state election scheduled for September 20, 2026. The political movement Team Freiheit has officially launched its campaign with a large-scale poster unveiling in Rostock. Led by founder Dr. Frauke Petry and former Minister President Thomas L. Kemmerich, the group aims to provide a pragmatic, civic-oriented alternative to the current administration.
Simultaneously, the incumbent SPD-led government under Minister President Manuela Schwesig has seen a significant increase in the distribution of state subsidies. Since July 1, 2026, at least 16 funding cases have been documented, ranging from 80,000 euros for fire equipment to 23 million euros for a cafeteria in Rostock. These allocations include support for various sectors such as clinics, agriculture, and fire departments, including a 50-million-euro program for new fire station facilities.
