Mecklenburg-Vorpommern election official defends postal voting security
Christian Boden, the State Election Commissioner for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has defended the security of postal voting against manipulation claims made by the AfD party. Ahead of upcoming state elections, Boden dismissed these doubts as 'remote,' asserting that while no system is entirely infallible, multiple security mechanisms are in place to prevent fraud.
Boden noted that while human errors can occur during the counting process, several layers of control exist to ensure accuracy. He emphasized that while the act of voting is secret, the counting process is public and open to citizen observation. He also expressed concern regarding the increasingly harsh tone in political discourse and the growing trend of questioning democratic processes.
In contrast, AfD politicians have called for stricter limitations on postal voting. Tino Chrupalla cited anecdotal concerns regarding influence in nursing homes, while Leif-Erik Holm argued that postal voting is more susceptible to manipulation and suggested it should be reserved only for those who are ill or immobile.
