Mecklenburg-Vorpommern faces severe drought in eastern and central regions

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is experiencing significant drought conditions, with approximately 60 percent of the state's area affected by moderate to severe drought. According to data from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, the eastern and central regions are the most severely impacted, specifically in areas between Greifswald and Altentreptow and south of Schwerin.

Recent precipitation has been insufficient to alleviate deep soil moisture deficits. Over the past seven days, the region received an average of only 12.5 millimeters of rain. With average temperatures at 16.6 degrees Celsius and recent highs reaching 23.3 degrees Celsius, the moisture levels in deeper soil layers remain low. Forecasts indicate no precipitation for the coming days, with temperatures expected to rise to 25.2 degrees Celsius, posing risks to agriculture and groundwater levels.
