Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Landtag establishes crisis preparedness commission

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Landtag has approved the formation of an inquiry commission to evaluate and strengthen civil protection and crisis management within the state. The initiative, supported by the SPD, Green, and Left parties, aims to assess the state's readiness for various threats, including extreme weather, pandemics, cyberattacks, and power outages.

The commission will consist of 19 members, including 10 parliamentarians and nine external experts, who are to be appointed by December 1. The group is tasked with reviewing existing structures and identifying vulnerabilities, specifically addressing the challenges posed by the region's geography, such as long distances, coastal areas, and islands.

Key areas of focus include lessons learned from recent events like the 2023 Baltic Sea storm surges, forest fires, and cyberattacks on local administration. Concerns were also raised regarding the reliance on volunteer emergency services in a region with an aging population and a shrinking workforce. The commission is expected to deliver an interim report within two years.
