Mecklenburg-Vorpommern officials focus on health prevention and medical strategies

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Health Minister Stefanie Drese has criticized the current debate regarding a sugar tax, stating it must not be used merely to fill budget deficits. Instead, she argues that any such tax should focus on reducing sugar consumption and combating nutrition-related illnesses like obesity and Type-2 diabetes. Drese suggests that revenue from a sugar tax should be directly reinvested into prevention programs, such as nutritional education and health promotion.

In a separate development, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Health Commission has presented its findings after four years of work. The commission, which included representatives from medical, scientific, and patient sectors, has developed strategies aimed at improving healthcare through 2040. Key focus areas include maternal and pediatric care, prevention, networked medicine, and healthy aging.

Proposed measures for maternal and pediatric care include enhanced cooperation between outpatient and inpatient services, increased use of telemedicine, and better-organized emergency care. The commission also emphasized a state strategy for health promotion focusing on mental health, addiction prevention, and health literacy.
