Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provides voting templates for visually impaired

Blind and visually impaired voters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can now cast their ballots independently during the upcoming state election using specialized ballot templates. The Blind and Visually Impaired Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is producing 550 templates to meet expected demand.

These templates function as a sleeve into which the ballot is inserted. They feature holes aligned with the voting circles on the ballot, marked with embossed numbers and Braille to allow voters to locate their chosen candidate by touch. Each template includes an audio CD explaining how to use the device and how to navigate the ballot.

State Election Officer Christian Boden noted that while voters can use these templates in person at polling stations or via mail-in voting, they are encouraged to take the template home after voting in a polling station to ensure the secrecy of the ballot. Alternatively, voters may choose to be assisted by a trusted person or a member of the election board.
