Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reports successful white stork breeding year
The white stork population in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern experienced a successful breeding year in 2026, according to Stefan Kroll, chairman of the Nabu state working group for white stork protection. The results show an improvement compared to the weak breeding season of 2025.
Data indicates a west-east gradient in breeding success across the region. In the western districts of Nordwestmecklenburg and Ludwigslust-Parchim, breeding pairs raised an average of more than two young birds. In the eastern part of the state, success rates were slightly lower, leading to an overall state average expected to be below two.
Experts attribute this regional difference to weather patterns, noting that higher rainfall in the west during spring likely improved food availability. While heavy rainfall can be fatal to chicks, significant extreme rain events were largely avoided this year. Unlike some other German regions where storks winter near landfills, storks in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern typically migrate to winter quarters by late August.
