Mecklenburg-Vorpommern seeks more municipal input on wind energy

The state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has approved a Bundesrat initiative to amend the Wind Energy Area Requirement Act. The goal is to grant municipalities greater participation in wind energy expansion to increase local acceptance. Under current federal law, wind energy areas with height restrictions—often implemented to protect landscapes, monuments, or aviation safety—cannot be credited toward the state's mandatory land targets. The initiative seeks to allow these areas to count toward the 1.4 percent land requirement the state must meet by 2027.

The CDU parliamentary group has criticized the move as 'show politics' and a late reaction to growing local resistance ahead of the state election. Energy policy spokesperson Wolfgang Waldmüller argued that the government has long prioritized expansion over local concerns and claimed the initiative is insufficient. The CDU is calling for a mandatory minimum distance of 1,000 meters from residential areas and a shift in focus from rigid land area targets to actual electricity generation capacity.
