AfD leads polls in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ahead of state election FAST-MOVING

As the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election approaches on September 20, 2026, recent polling indicates a highly polarized political landscape. The AfD currently leads in several surveys, with the Infratest-dimap poll placing them at 38%, followed closely by the SPD at 33% or 34%. The CDU faces a potential historic low, with polling figures as low as 7%.

Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has centered her campaign on mobilizing voters against the AfD, positioning herself as a primary opponent to the party. Despite the AfD's lead in party preference, Schwesig performs significantly better in direct comparisons for the role of Minister President, with 61% of respondents favoring her over AfD challenger Leif-Erik Holm.

Other parties including the Linke, Greens, and BSW are also competing for seats, with the Linke polling around 9-11%. The election is marked by intense debate over the AfD's platform, including its policies on migration and education, as well as internal CDU discussions regarding leadership and campaign strategy following recent losses in other German states.
