Mecklenburg-Vorpommern vegetable and sunflower harvests jump

In 2025, vegetable cultivation on open fields in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern covered about 2,500 ha, a 3.8 % increase over 2024. Sixty farms harvested roughly 71,700 t, up 14.5 % year‑on‑year. Leaf‑and‑stem vegetables accounted for about 25,600 t on ~1,000 ha, while root and tuber crops yielded around 22,600 t, a 54.4 % rise on 535 ha. Strawberry production was also reported, with 21 farms growing on open fields and three under protective covers.

In 2026, the area planted with sunflowers expanded to roughly 7,000 ha, more than double the 2,770 ha reported for 2025. Agriculture Minister Dr. Till Backhaus described the growth as a “positive signal” for a modern, diverse and climate‑resilient agriculture, highlighting benefits for pollinators and regional value‑added processing.
