Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater to premiere modern ballet adaptation of Faust

The Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater in Schwerin is set to premiere a new ballet production titled ‘Walpurgisnacht: Das Erwachen’ on October 30, 2026. Choreographed by Ana Isabel Casquilho, the performance offers a contemporary interpretation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s ‘Faust’.

Rather than using spoken dialogue, the production utilizes physical movement, light, and stage design to explore the internal states of the characters. The narrative focuses on a modern version of Faust who struggles with the pressures of productivity, efficiency, and the constant demand for performance in contemporary society, leading to a loss of self.

The ballet features a musical score combining classical works by Charles Gounod with new compositions by David Nigro.
