MED-EL launches world's first invisible cochlear implant

MED-EL has launched TICI UNICO, the world’s first commercially available totally invisible cochlear implant. Unlike traditional systems that require an external audio processor, all components of this device are implanted beneath the skin, utilizing innovative microphone technology to capture sound through the skin.

The system is designed for individuals with severe-to-profound hearing loss, allowing for continuous 24/7 hearing during activities such as sleeping, swimming, and exercising. The device is CE Mark approved and is being introduced to European markets. Clinical data suggests hearing performance is comparable to established cochlear implant solutions.

In clinical milestones related to this technology, the University Hospital Würzburg in Germany reported the first successful bilateral implantation of a fully implantable system in a single patient. Additionally, the Medical University of Vienna and AKH Vienna have transitioned the technology from clinical studies to regular patient care, performing the first routine operations outside of a study setting.
