Medaglia d’Oro, influential champion stallion, dies at 27

Champion stallion Medaglia d’Oro has died at the age of 27 at Godolphin’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky. A highly influential sire in the modern era, the son of El Prado concluded a career that saw him excel both as a racer and a breeder.

During his racing career, Medaglia d’Oro won eight of 17 starts, earning over US$5.7 million. His major victories included the Grade 1 Travers Stakes, the Whitney Handicap, and the Donn Handicap. He also secured notable second-place finishes in the Belmont Stakes and the Dubai World Cup.

As a stallion, he sired 31 individual Group 1 and Grade 1 winners, including champions such as Rachel Alexandra, Songbird, and Golden Sixty. His breeding legacy continues globally, including in Venezuela, where his descendants like Tuscan Gold remain competitive at La Rinconada.
