Medan DPRD debates poverty alleviation regulation changes

The Medan City Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) held a plenary session to discuss the draft amendment to Regional Regulation Number 5 of 2015 concerning Poverty Alleviation. During the session, various factions emphasized that poverty reduction must move beyond mere social assistance (bansos).

The Gerindra faction stressed the need for economic empowerment, including access to jobs, skills, capital, and education, to ensure citizens can achieve economic independence. Meanwhile, the PKS faction raised concerns regarding the accuracy of decile data and the effectiveness of budget allocation. They called for a clear mechanism to correct data discrepancies to ensure social protection reaches those truly in need.

Deputy Mayor Zakiyuddin Harahap attended the meeting, which was led by DPRD Chairman Wong Chun Sen. The proposed regulatory changes aim to provide a stronger legal foundation for poverty reduction policies in Medan.
