Medan Mayor Rico Waas pledges to rebuild family's home in Belawan

Medan Mayor Rico Waas has pledged to expedite the reconstruction of a home for Cica Herliawati, whose family has lived in a cramped kitchen for approximately ten years. The family's residence in Jalan Besar Bagan, Belawan, was largely destroyed by tidal surges a decade ago, leaving only the kitchen area as a shelter.

During a visit to the site on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the Mayor observed the severe living conditions, noting that four people share a single bed while one child sleeps separately. The household, supported by a fisherman with limited income, must navigate wooden planks over muddy terrain and waste to reach the structure.

Mayor Waas stated that the house must be rebuilt as soon as possible through the city's uninhabitable house rehabilitation program (RTLH) to ensure aid reaches those in most urgent need.
