Medan police arrest drug dealer amid calls to reform local official recruitment
Police in Medan have intensified efforts against narcotics trafficking, highlighted by a recent raid in the Medan Maimun district. On September 4, 2026, the Medan Kota Police conducted a drug nest raid on Jalan Brigjen Katamso, resulting in the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect. Authorities seized approximately 11 grams of crystal methamphetamine, empty plastic clips, and cash. During the operation, police also demolished and burned structures used as drug consumption sites.
This arrest follows a series of incidents involving local neighborhood heads (Kepling) in Medan. Throughout 2026, three different Kepling officials have been detained for suspected involvement in drug distribution or use. In response to these recurring cases, Syaiful Ramadhan of the Medan City Council has urged the local government to revise Regional Regulation Number 9 of 2017. The proposed revision seeks to mandate drug testing as a prerequisite for all candidates seeking appointment to neighborhood head positions to ensure they are drug-free.
