Indonesia energy sector sees increased competition and shifting resource priorities

Global energy companies, including BP, INPEX, and Petronas, are intensifying competition to explore oil and gas potential in Eastern and Central Indonesia. Major players are currently operating in blocks such as Agung, Barong, and Serpang, with a strategic focus on the relatively unexplored eastern regions to discover new reserves.

In the corporate sector, MedcoEnergi reported a 19 percent increase in oil and gas production for the first half of 2026, reaching 170 mboepd. The company maintained its 2026 production guidance and reported a significant rise in net profit, which grew by 282.3 percent to 67.4 million USD.

Concurrently, the Mineral Industry Agency (BIM) noted a shift in national power metrics. The agency suggests that global economic strength is moving away from fossil fuel reserves toward the ownership and extraction technology of rare earth elements (REE). This shift is driven by the global energy transition and the rising demand for minerals required for electric vehicles and wind turbines.
