Medef organizes 2027 presidential debate amid business tax concerns
The Medef, France's largest employers' federation, is leveraging its annual conference, LaREF, to influence the 2027 presidential election. A major highlight of the event is a televised debate at Roland-Garros featuring seven key political candidates: Marine Le Pen, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Édouard Philippe, Gabriel Attal, Bruno Retailleau, Marine Tondelier, and Raphaël Glucksmann. The debate focuses on critical economic issues including taxation, public debt, employment, and reindustrialization.
Medef president Patrick Martin has warned against increasing the tax burden on companies to address public finance deficits, arguing that the private sector already carries a significant load. This follows a massive consultation of 65,872 business leaders conducted between April and July 2026. The survey results reveal significant economic anxiety, with 82% of leaders expressing pessimism regarding future economic policies and 79% identifying taxation as a major obstacle. Key demands from the business community include administrative simplification and regulatory stability.
