Medellín and surrounding municipalities face water discoloration

Residents in Medellín and the municipalities of Itagüí, La Estrella, and Sabaneta have reported water appearing yellow or brown from their taps. The utility company, Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM), attributed the discoloration to repairs on a 36-inch diameter primary water main located in the Envigado area.

The damage affected the supply from the La Ayurá treatment plant, which provides nearly half of the potable water for Medellín and its metropolitan area. EPM stated that the color changes are a temporary condition resulting from the maneuvers required to fix the leak and restore service.

EPM has advised residents not to consume water that appears discolored. Users are encouraged to let the water run for several minutes until it becomes clear again. Additionally, the company recommended avoiding washing white or light-colored clothing while the supply stabilizes.
