Latin American literary events: Ediciones Era support, Medellín festival, and FIL Guadalajara

Several major cultural and literary events are unfolding across Latin America. In Mexico, the independent publisher Ediciones Era is facing a financial crisis following a drop in sales and bookstore closures. In response, the Complejo Cultural Los Pinos will host a special book sale on August 29 and 30, featuring discounted titles and first editions. Additionally, the Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) has agreed to support the publisher through stock purchases for reading clubs, participation in upcoming night sales, and potential co-editions of historical titles to preserve the catalog.

In Colombia, the Medellín Book and Culture Festival is preparing for its 20th anniversary in 2026. The event will feature South Korea as the guest of honor, offering 3,600 activities including workshops, literary conversations, and cultural exhibitions. The festival serves as a precursor to Medellín being named a UNESCO World Book Capital in 2027.

In Mexico, the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) is celebrating its 40th anniversary with the ‘26 en el 26’ initiative. This program highlights 26 novelists born between 1986 and 2000 from 13 different countries, aiming to showcase the direction of contemporary Spanish-language narrative.
