Medellín launches expansion of Atanasio Girardot stadium ahead of 2026 Run Fest

The Medellín municipal government has begun the first phase of a major renovation of the Atanasio Girardot stadium, dismantling the western tribune roof in a controlled demolition that will last about two months. The project, overseen by Mayor Federico Gutiérrez, will increase capacity to 62,000 seats and modernize the facility with improved accessibility, safety and services, while allowing Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín to continue using the venue during the works.

The upgraded stadium will host the second edition of the Grandeza Run Fest on 26 July 2026, expecting around 10,000 runners across 3 km, 5 km, 11 km and 15 km routes. Organisers project a $1.5 million economic boost from roughly 2,000 visitors, and highlight social inclusion through a partnership with the Fundación Divergente for neurodivergent youth. The event will also feature a farewell tribute to former Atlético Nacional player Macnelly Torres.
