Medellín megaprison reaches 47% construction progress

The construction of the Medellín Metropolitan Megaprison for defendants in Colombia has reached 47% completion. Located in the San Cristóbal district, the project involves an investment exceeding 675,000 million pesos (approximately 168 million USD).

The facility is designed to house 1,339 inmates across six pavilions and aims to alleviate overcrowding in the Valle de Aburrá prison system and local police stations. It is being developed under a pioneering Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, featuring a 15-year concession consisting of three years for construction and twelve years for operation.

According to Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez, physical works on pavilions 1 through 5 have reached the fourth structural level. The official schedule anticipates the completion of physical construction by May 2027, with the first transfer of 1,200 inmates expected by late July 2027. The project has already generated 563 direct jobs, prioritizing local residents from San Cristóbal.
