Media and politicians face scrutiny over lynching rhetoric

Media outlets and political figures are facing scrutiny over the use of lynching rhetoric in recent news coverage and advertising. In Mississippi, the Associated Press drew criticism for linking the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman found hanging from a tree, to the history of Southern lynchings. This coverage occurred after a Black man, Jarques Ratliff, was charged with her murder, though authorities had not established a motive.

Simultaneously, Converse has pulled a sneaker advertisement following social media backlash. Critics and reports from The Washington Post suggested the ad imagery resembled a Ku Klux Klan hood positioned near dangling feet. Some commentators have speculated that the imagery may have been intentionally designed to provoke outrage.

On Capitol Hill, Representative Ayanna Pressley and approximately 50 other Democrats have called for a federal investigation into several hanging deaths involving Black individuals this year. However, medical examiners have ruled nine of the ten previously cited cases as suicides, with only one case currently being investigated as a homicide.
