Media criticism regarding coverage of Gaza genocide

Critic Chris Hedges argues that Western media outlets facilitate the genocide in Gaza through double standards, censorship, and deceptive language. He contends that media coverage manufactures consent for Israel’s military occupation and apartheid by erasing violations of international law and perpetuating a narrative of Israeli victimhood.

Hedges notes that at least 220 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed by Israel between October 7, 2023, and August 2025. He claims that media organizations often use passive language to avoid accountability, describing violence as a “cycle of violence” or “clashes” rather than using terms like “genocide,” “atrocity,” or “ethnic cleansing.”

The critique further alleges that major outlets, such as the New York Times, have been instructed to avoid specific terms like “Palestine,” “carnage,” or “massacre” when referencing Palestinians, while simultaneously amplifying unverified claims to obfuscate the reality of the situation in Gaza.
