Yaguachi: Media fixer René Manuel Cobos Merchán assassinated

René Manuel Cobos Merchán, a 49-year-old fixer who assisted international and national journalists in covering organized crime, was assassinated in the early hours of Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Yaguachi, Guayas.

According to reports and family testimonies, approximately six armed and hooded men arrived in two vehicles wearing clothing similar to security forces. The attackers reportedly entered a neighbor's home first, killing 29-year-old José Manuel Vélez Vera, before proceeding to Cobos's residence. Investigators recovered 30 shell casings at the scene, including 9mm and 5.56mm rounds.

Fundamedios, an organization defending freedom of expression, has called for an exhaustive investigation, urging authorities not to rule out a connection between the murder and Cobos's professional work. It was noted that Cobos had received prior threats and had recently worked on a report for BBC News regarding security and organized crime in Ecuador.
