Media freedom in Serbia faces systemic threats, says Veran Matić

Veran Matić, founder of Radio B92 and president of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), has raised alarms regarding the deteriorating state of media freedom in Serbia under President Aleksandar Vučić. Matić asserts that the regime aims to eliminate anyone perceived as a threat, labeling journalists who adhere to European standards as enemies of the state.

Reports indicate that the state has become an adversary to the press, with police documented using physical force against media workers. Matić claims the state actively protects criminal elements and groups associated with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) while suppressing voices in culture, education, and the economy.

According to the Reporters Without Borders index, Serbia is categorized in a problematic or difficult zone for press freedom. The crackdown has reportedly forced at least six media workers into exile to ensure their safety.
