Trump administration faces lawsuit over White House press ban
CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have filed a federal lawsuit in Washington, D.C., challenging the Trump administration's decision to revoke their White House press credentials and bar them from the presidential complex.
The news organizations allege that the restrictions violate First Amendment protections against viewpoint discrimination and Fifth Amendment due process rights, as the bans were implemented without prior notice. The administration has defended the move, with President Trump characterizing the targeted outlets as spreading “fake news” and describing certain coverage as a national security concern. The White House maintains that media organizations can still perform reporting duties from outside the White House grounds.
The dispute has impacted presidential coverage, including the removal of the affected outlets from the television news pool for presidential travel. In solidarity, major networks including ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC have suspended their participation in the pool. Additionally, The New York Times announced it would withhold publishing White House photographer images in support of the affected outlets until a judicial review is completed.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly has scheduled a videoconference hearing for Wednesday afternoon to consider a request for a temporary restraining order to restore access.
