Media professionals address journalism skill gaps in West Africa

Discussions regarding the quality of journalism training in West Africa have resurfaced following critiques from media leaders and new professional development initiatives.

In Côte d’Ivoire, Life TV executive Fabrice Sawegnon expressed significant dissatisfaction with the skill levels of recent journalism graduates. Sawegnon noted that a recent recruitment drive at Life TV received between 300 and 400 applications, yet none of the candidates met the company’s standards for selection. He challenged aspiring journalists to prove their abilities through direct field testing, highlighting a perceived gap between academic training and industry requirements.

In Cameroon, CANAL+ University addressed the demand for specialized skills by hosting a five-day sports journalism training program in Douala. Led by veteran journalist Vincent Radureau, who brings 34 years of experience, the program saw high interest with over 500 applicants for only 33 spots. The training focused on practical skills, including interview preparation, match commentary, and on-air presence, responding to a specific request from the local sports press for updated professional methods.
