Media professionals discuss future of public and local journalism in Spain

Media professionals recently convened in Spain to address the strategic challenges facing both public broadcasting and local press. At a roundtable hosted by the Acció Cultural del País Valencià (ACPV), experts discussed the future of the Valencian public broadcaster, À Punt.

Participants emphasized the need for stable long-term financing and strategic planning to move away from improvised decision-making. Key proposals included reinforcing the use of the Valencian language, increasing local fiction and dubbing, and creating native digital content—such as podcasts—specifically designed for digital platforms rather than simple re-broadcasts. There was also a highlighted urgency to develop content for younger audiences to ensure generational continuity.

Separately, the Associació Catalana de la Premsa Comarcal (ACPC) held its 13th Regional Press Day in Barcelona. The event brought together local press associations from across Spain to discuss the sustainability of proximity media and the digital transformation. While participants noted that print remains a more easily monetized business model, they expressed a commitment to integrating digital channels despite limited economic margins.
