Media trends show rise of creator content on FAST TV and microdramas

The media landscape is seeing a convergence between social media content and traditional television formats. According to a market analysis by 3Vision presented at IBC in Amsterdam, YouTubers and social media influencers are increasingly transitioning to FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV) platforms. Streaming services are utilizing existing creator catalogs to launch 24/7 linear channels, leveraging established fanbases and low production costs. Creators like MrBeast are already featured on platforms such as Samsung TV Plus, Pluto TV, Roku, and Amazon.

Simultaneously, the microdrama format—short, vertical fiction series typically under two minutes—is gaining traction. In the Netherlands, the KRO-NCRV production ‘De Laatste Zomer’ achieved 16 million views on YouTube and TikTok, demonstrating high engagement among younger audiences. This format, which originated in China and moved through the US, allows for low-budget, character-driven storytelling designed specifically for mobile consumption. Both trends highlight a shift where content originally created for social platforms is being repurposed for linear and mobile-first viewing experiences.
