Mediapart journalist expelled from Morocco

Nejma Brahim, a Franco-Algerian journalist for the French investigative news site Mediapart, was denied entry to Morocco and expelled from Tangier Airport on August 13. Brahim, a specialist in migration issues, had traveled to Morocco to interview families of migrants who died or disappeared during a late July tragedy near Ceuta.

Upon arrival at Tangier Airport, Brahim was taken by the Direction générale de la sûreté nationale (DGSN) for an interrogation lasting approximately five hours. During this time, she identified herself as a journalist and explained her professional mission. Following the interrogation, her passport was confiscated, and she was held in an airport boarding area overnight without being informed of her destination.

She was placed on a flight to Paris the following morning. Once on board, the pilot returned her passport along with an official entry refusal document. Mediapart noted that the document provided no specific reason for the expulsion and uniquely listed her nationality as ‘French of Algerian origin’. French consular authorities were unable to prevent the expulsion.
