Medicaid to end coverage for some gender-affirming care for transgender minors FAST-MOVING

The Trump administration has announced that Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will cease coverage for certain gender-affirming surgeries and hormone treatments for transgender minors. The policy, which is scheduled to take effect on October 13, specifically targets treatments for those under 19.

Under the new guidelines, Medicaid and CHIP will continue to fund mental health services for transgender minors. However, coverage for hormone treatments used for puberty blocking or to induce sex-related physical changes will be phased out for current recipients by April 2027. President Trump stated he directed CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz to implement these changes, describing the practices as causing irreversible harm.

Advocacy groups, including GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders, have criticized the move, stating it creates barriers for parents making medical decisions for their children and warning of impending legal challenges. Currently, at least 27 states have already implemented bans on gender-affirming care for minors.
