Medical advancements address rare diseases through specialized treatment and AI tools

Medical professionals are utilizing new technologies to address challenges in diagnosing rare diseases and managing complex clinical workflows.

In Taiwan, a 70-year-old patient with a history of cirrhosis and hepatitis C was diagnosed with Evans syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder where antibodies attack both red blood cells and platelets. The patient required intensive care and high-dose immunoglobulin treatment after standard blood transfusions proved ineffective. Doctors noted that Evans syndrome requires controlling the underlying immune response rather than simply replacing blood cells.

In China, clinicians at Nanfang Hospital are leveraging AI to bridge the gap between clinical expertise and technical implementation. Using Huawei’s DCS AI solution and the HAIP platform, doctors can now create AI agents using natural language without needing to write code. This allows them to build tools that integrate fragmented data from multiple departments, which is critical for diagnosing time-sensitive conditions like atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). This technology aims to reduce the diagnostic window for rare diseases where rapid intervention is vital to prevent irreversible organ damage.
