Medical advancements in cardiology reported in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Medical facilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina are advancing specialized cardiac care through new technology and procedures.
University Hospital Foča has introduced an intravascular ultrasound device, valued at 70,000 KM, as part of a government reconstruction and equipment project. This technology allows cardiologists to visualize the interior of coronary arteries via catheter, providing detailed data on vessel dimensions, narrowing, and plaque morphology. This diagnostic capability is intended to improve the precision of stent placement and reduce surgical complications.
In a separate development, the University Clinical Center (UKC) Tuzla has become the first public health institution in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to offer cardiac electrophysiology services. This specialized procedure is used for the diagnosis and treatment of complex heart rhythm disorders. The implementation is part of a strategic development plan to modernize invasive cardiology services within the public sector, reducing the need for patients to seek expensive treatments abroad.
