Medical advancements in Italian sports medicine and cardiac genetics

Medical professionals and researchers in Italy are focusing on specialized advancements in sports medicine and cardiac genetics.

In Assisi, a study day titled ‘The muscle injury in the athlete: from trauma to return to sports practice’ is gathering over 250 participants, including doctors, therapists, and kinesiologists. The event, presided over by Prof. Giuliano Cerulli, Prof. Pierluigi Antinolfi, and Dr. Leandro Palomba, aims to establish methodological criteria for managing injuries, preventing complications, and facilitating a safe return to athletic activity. The program includes discussions on regenerative therapy and the perspectives of Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Simultaneously, the Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova has established itself as a center of excellence for cardiac genetics. Through its specialized clinic, the institution conducts research and prevention efforts regarding heart diseases caused by genetic mutations. Director Paolo Fortuna noted the importance of analyzing family history and genetic causes to prevent sudden death. Research highlights that while myocardial pathology mortality was higher in previous decades, systematic screening and genetic identification have significantly improved safety for athletes.
