Medical advancements in mRNA cancer vaccines and CRISPR cholesterol therapy

Researchers from Moderna and Merck have announced successful Phase III clinical trial results for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine designed to prevent melanoma recurrence. The adjuvant therapy, named intismeran, is administered to patients after surgical tumor removal. In a study of 1,137 patients with melanoma stages IIB to IV, those receiving a combination of the vaccine and Keytruda showed significantly longer recurrence-free survival compared to those receiving Keytruda alone.

The vaccine is personalized by sequencing a patient's specific tumor genome and using artificial intelligence to identify neoantigens. This allows the creation of synthetic mRNA that instructs the immune system to target unique cancer cell proteins.

In a separate medical development, an experimental gene-editing therapy using CRISPR-Cas9 has shown potential for the permanent reduction of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. In a small clinical study of 15 patients with severe hypercholesterolemia, participants receiving the highest dose experienced an average reduction in LDL levels of nearly 53 percent. These effects remained stable for at least one year without serious adverse effects. The therapy works by targeting the liver to mimic natural genetic mutations that regulate lipid levels.
