Medical advancements offer new options for complex heart disease in Taiwan

Medical experts in Taiwan are highlighting advanced surgical options for complex cardiovascular conditions, emphasizing that traditional methods like stents may not always be the optimal choice for high-risk patients.

Professor Chen Shao-wei of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital notes that for patients with complex coronary artery disease—particularly those with diabetes or multiple vessel blockages—coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) can offer better long-term survival rates than stents. Research indicates that patients who receive stents prior to bypass surgery face a higher 30-day mortality rate (7.2% compared to 5.0%) and a higher risk of needing further vascular reconstruction.

For elderly patients facing complications from previous heart surgeries, such as degenerated biological valves, minimally invasive options are becoming more prevalent. Dr. Su Yan-bo of Cathay General Hospital discusses the Transcatheter Mitral Valve-in-Valve (TMViV) procedure. This technique allows doctors to implant a new valve within an existing, degenerated biological valve via a catheter through the groin, avoiding the high risks associated with traditional open-chest surgery in older populations.
